US Army Jeep
“Jeep” U.S. Army truck, ¼ ton, 4x4 Command Reconnaissance
Overview
Though the Jeep’s contributions to WWII are clear, the origin of its name remains mysterious. A strong theory is the name comes from the letters "GP", the military abbreviation for "General Purpose". This is comparable to the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) turning into Humvee or Hummer. Some claim the Jeep is named after Eugene the Jeep, a mythical creature featured in the Popeye comics. It has also been noted that the term Jeep was used as early as WWI as slang for a new recruit, and by Army motorpool personnel as a slang term for a new, unproved vehicle received for test. Though there are many theories none have enough evidence to settle the matter.
