Education Volunteers / Docents & Living History Volunteers

Docents and living history volunteers invite visitors to the stories, artifacts, and Museum resources. As Museum educators, docents and living history volunteers help guide visitors to the stories we often overlook--the logistics of an artillery strike, fighting in the jungle and its diseases (as well as the enemy), moving a jeep from the factory to the battlefield, receiving letters from home and so many more. These volunteers also provide support to our education department's outreach and public programs. Together, we work to instill a sense of value and empathy for the stories we tell.

Behind-the-Scenes Volunteers

Volunteers help staff recover and reset for the next educational program. BTS volunteers help with special events, camps and drop-in programs with duties ranging from supporting online educational programming, checking in participants to weapon repair, to vehicle maintenance, clothing repair, etc.

Visitor Services Volunteers / Gallery Attendant & Welcome Desk Volunteer

Visitor Services volunteers are, literally, our front line. As a Gallery Attendant, you will orient visitors to the museum campus, programs, and ticket options before they get to the admissions desks. In addition, you will help visitors find their way to specific features in the galleries and answer general questions about the WWII in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. Volunteer applicants must be at least 16 years old, with parental permission and waivers signed.

In addition to initial volunteer training, each gallery attendant will complement his or her training with a 12-hour mentorship with an experienced gallery attendant.

Administrative Volunteers

Administrative volunteers support a variety of behind-the-scenes projects and programs. In general, we seek applicants with excellent communication and organizational skills. If you are detail-oriented and comfortable working independently and with minimum supervision, are able to adapt to shifting priorities, and are confident in Microsoft Office programs, including Outlook, Word and Excel, this might be for you.

Special Event Volunteers

We welcome volunteers interested in serving occasionally as planners and helpful hands, especially over holidays (Spring Break week, Thanksgiving week, Christmas through New Years), Memorial Day, Veterans Day and Pearl Harbor Day; and during perennial fundraising events such as the Nimitz Dinner & Distinguished Speaker Lecture, the Nimitz Golf Classic, and Red White & Bourbon.

Tributes Volunteers

Thousands of plaques and bricks line the Memorial Courtyard's wall and walkways. Tributes volunteers help install and care for plaques. A team of volunteer dedicators officiate over plaque and brick dedications.

Maintenance and Facilities Volunteers

The Maintenance and Facilities Department is looking for volunteers and volunteer groups to help with various projects around the campus. These projects include watering the grounds, painting projects, cleaning rain gutters twice a year, planting seasonal flower beds, and spreading mulch or treated soil. If you're interested in getting involved and helping out with any of these projects, you can contact the Director of Maintenance, Noe Truan, for a full list of available opportunities. Whether you're an individual looking to make a difference or a group looking for a team-building activity, volunteering in the Maintenance and Facilities Department can be a fulfilling and rewarding experience.
